Quick List of the Best-Looking Upcoming Movies

Posted on Jul 28, 2007 - 11:18 AM

I just watched a bunch of trailers on Apple; I was going to write about a few of the best.  Problem is, there’s a lot that look pretty good.  And they all star Nicole Kidman (actually three of them do, but still...)  I always forget during the summer that the good movies come out after.  Most of these are small, some (1-18-08, I Am Legend) are not.

Dedication

One of these days Mandy Moore will be in a good movie (I haven’t seen Chasing Liberty, so maybe I’m missing out.)  This looks like it.  See, not all teenage pop-stars have to be uncontrollable messes.

The Darjeeling Limited

You are so quirky Wes Anderson!  Ha ha ha, the train gets lost, even though it’s on tracks… He is unique and if nothing else, I’ll almost definitely like it.  Whether I love it…

No Country For Old Men

Ooooooo! A Coen Brother’s movie.  Not sure it could be bad, but it looks really good. +1 for coin flipping bad-guy!

Rocket Science

Loved this trailer. Favorite line: "It’s too bad you’re not hyperactive, because that I can work miracles with."

Superbad

Seth Rogen is funny, this looks really funny.

The Golden Compass

I can like kids movies.  Stardust looks like a mess, this looks much, much better than that. Nicole Kidman sighting #2.

Death At a Funeral

British people make me laugh.  Liked the part where they open the coffin and it’s the wrong guy.

Feast of Love

Yet another Shakespeare update.  Morgan Freeman always sounds like he should be president, even when he’s talking about two women falling in love.

Margot At the Wedding

First Nicole Kidman sighting.  This is the small movie, looks like a decent chick-flick. I didn’t buy Jack Black as a love interest in The Holiday (well, I didn’t buy the movie at all) but maybe here.

Introducing the Dwights

Looks ok.  Not the most fantastic of the lot, but some bits looked genuinely good.

This is England

This looks, in short, fantastic.

1-18-08

JJ’s doing some nice viral marketing. No name yet (though it might be called Monstrous.) There’s a chance this is another Godzilla.  I need to see more before I’ll buy in totally, but great start.

Broken English

Looks good, if not fantastic.

The Invasion

Remake of Invasion of the Body Snatchers (wasn’t there a failed TV Show like this too… maybe one called Invasion...) Nicole Kidman got kinda hurt in this one (remember the car wreck thing?)

August Rush

This looks really good, and Freddie Highmore ("Charlie and the Chocolate Factory") is enormously appealing.  A bit too much Felicity makes me cringe whenever Keri Russell is in a movie, but I can get past that.

Lions For Lambs

I want an Oscar, I want an Oscar. Looks like a message movie and since it has Meryl Streep it thinks it can get an Oscar (particularly given the subject...) We’ll see, but will probably be at least good.

Charlie Bartlett

Looks good, though not inspired.  Outsider finding a way to fit into high-school.  I liked the bit where he tells the shrink other people’s problems and gets them prescriptions.

Talk To Me

Don Cheadle looks awesome… I’d bet, just based on the trailer, that he’ll get a Best Actor nod or two.

American Gangster

This one has Russell Crowe, so it wants an Oscar too, this one has Denzel Washington as well, so it just might.  Though not for Russell, everyone hates him.

I Am Legend

Go Will Smith, GO! Kill the bad vampires (or whatever) in empty New York.  Empty London was much creepier in 28 Days/Weeks Later, perhaps because it looked real and not like a special effect, but I’ll give this the benefit of the doubt. I think Will Smith is a fine actor (and gets better with every movie) so this could be good.
