Huxley the Dog

Posted on Oct 30, 2007 - 12:27 PM

This is Huxley a Bichon Frisé / Poodle mix whom we adopted from the Humane Society last week.

He’s a year and a half old, house-trained and very, very snuggly.  This is good until you have to leave at which point he barks hysterically. He never barks otherwise. Unless the doorbell rings (on TV or otherwise.) Or he sees a rabbit… rabbits are awesome.

He’s a eunuch now, though he doesn’t know it and will happily try to take over the territory of another dog. He runs into issues proving his manhood when he walks, since he prances like a poodle.

He has yet to figure out that he’s my dog and follows my wife around adoringly. If I walk out the door he looks for my wife.  If she walks out the door he sits by it and whimpers softly.

He’ll play fetch but he won’t give you the ball; you have to take it. He does, however, throw the ball to himself by tossing it backwards over his back.

The name came from a scientist contemporary to Charles Darwin Thomas Henry Huxley. Huxley was a talented comparative anatomist who was an early and vocal proponent of Darwin’s theory of evolution earning him the nickname ‘Darwin’s Bulldog.’ Plus this allows me to name my dog Huxley Humes which is awesomely alliterative.

Hello Huxley!

Ryan,

I guess that with all of the wedding plans I am not home very much, but why have I not heard that you had a dog!  It would be great to know!

Looks like a good dog and since he has hair not fur, Mica and Braeden are not allergic to him

Hey -

I just saw this post while researching Bichon Frise. My wife and I also adopted a Bichon Frise / Poodle mix from a rescue organization recently. He looks a lot like Huxley (they could be twins), and has all of the same characteristics you described. Ours (Sabre) also only barks when left alone. Have you had any luck helping Huxley get over this? We can’t leave Sabre alone because he barks and howls himself sick.

Thanks,
Dave

You might wish to gather further information on the other dog. Ask your neighbors if the dog has ever been aggressive to them or their pets.

I found that the more you socialize the dog with others it starts to calm them down.My dog was just horrific for a while..but the socializing worked. Its also embarrassing to have a ten pound dog that acts like a pitbull !!!!

Puppies develop very quickly during their first three months, particularly after their eyes and ears open and they are no longer completely dependent on their mother.hundejacken

The members of the commission work hard to deal with the issues before them and with very energized citizens who can

get unruly and downright nasty. I have seen them take more abuse than I would be willing to take in that role.<a
