I just watched a bunch of trailers on Apple; I was going to write about a few of the best. Problem is, there’s a lot that look pretty good. And they all star Nicole Kidman (actually three of them do, but still...) I always forget during the summer that the good movies come out after. Most of these are small, some (1-18-08, I Am Legend) are not.

Dedication

One of these days Mandy Moore will be in a good movie (I haven’t seen Chasing Liberty, so maybe I’m missing out.) This looks like it. See, not all teenage pop-stars have to be uncontrollable messes.

The Darjeeling Limited

You are so quirky Wes Anderson! Ha ha ha, the train gets lost, even though it’s on tracks… He is unique and if nothing else, I’ll almost definitely like it. Whether I love it…

No Country For Old Men

Ooooooo! A Coen Brother’s movie. Not sure it could be bad, but it looks really good. +1 for coin flipping bad-guy!

Rocket Science

Loved this trailer. Favorite line: "It’s too bad you’re not hyperactive, because that I can work miracles with."

Superbad

Seth Rogen is funny, this looks really funny.

The Golden Compass

I can like kids movies. Stardust looks like a mess, this looks much, much better than that. Nicole Kidman sighting #2.

Death At a Funeral

British people make me laugh. Liked the part where they open the coffin and it’s the wrong guy.

Feast of Love

Yet another Shakespeare update. Morgan Freeman always sounds like he should be president, even when he’s talking about two women falling in love.

Margot At the Wedding

First Nicole Kidman sighting. This is the small movie, looks like a decent chick-flick. I didn’t buy Jack Black as a love interest in The Holiday (well, I didn’t buy the movie at all) but maybe here.

Introducing the Dwights

Looks ok. Not the most fantastic of the lot, but some bits looked genuinely good.

This is England

This looks, in short, fantastic.

1-18-08

JJ’s doing some nice viral marketing. No name yet (though it might be called Monstrous.) There’s a chance this is another Godzilla. I need to see more before I’ll buy in totally, but great start.

Broken English

Looks good, if not fantastic.

The Invasion

Remake of Invasion of the Body Snatchers (wasn’t there a failed TV Show like this too… maybe one called Invasion...) Nicole Kidman got kinda hurt in this one (remember the car wreck thing?)

August Rush

This looks really good, and Freddie Highmore ("Charlie and the Chocolate Factory") is enormously appealing. A bit too much Felicity makes me cringe whenever Keri Russell is in a movie, but I can get past that.

Lions For Lambs

I want an Oscar, I want an Oscar. Looks like a message movie and since it has Meryl Streep it thinks it can get an Oscar (particularly given the subject...) We’ll see, but will probably be at least good.

Charlie Bartlett

Looks good, though not inspired. Outsider finding a way to fit into high-school. I liked the bit where he tells the shrink other people’s problems and gets them prescriptions.

Talk To Me

Don Cheadle looks awesome… I’d bet, just based on the trailer, that he’ll get a Best Actor nod or two.

American Gangster

This one has Russell Crowe, so it wants an Oscar too, this one has Denzel Washington as well, so it just might. Though not for Russell, everyone hates him.

I Am Legend

Go Will Smith, GO! Kill the bad vampires (or whatever) in empty New York. Empty London was much creepier in 28 Days/Weeks Later, perhaps because it looked real and not like a special effect, but I’ll give this the benefit of the doubt. I think Will Smith is a fine actor (and gets better with every movie) so this could be good.

Little more than a rehashing of previous Pixar greatness with a very brief clip of the movie, this is by far the least exciting of the Pixar teasers (even counting Cars which was worrying.) The teasers for Monsters, Inc. and The Incredibles were so cool it’s hard to understand why a teaser as lazy as this one escaped. Every Pixar movie scares me because my expectations are so high; I’d hate to be disappointed.

I have chosen my fifteen favorite movies. I’ll be posting something about each of them, starting with these, the ones that didn’t make the list.

Punch Drunk Love

Punch Drunk Love is not a typical Adam Sandler Movie; it’s smart. Characters have reasons for acting the way they do beyond "I think it would be funny." That, in and of itself is reason to watch. It’s also very, very funny in an off-kilter sort of way. Watch this, if for no other reason than to take what you’ve learned about his character to other Adam Sandler movies and realize that maybe it’s not lazy writing that makes him act that way, it’s too many pushy sisters.

Unforgiven

A masterpiece of a western. I am not a John Wayne western fan, but this film transcends the formula and is riveting in its unromantic portrayal of violence and revenge. You can feel Eastwood shaking off the ghosts of his past and showing us what he really feels about the violence in his older movies. Brilliant all around.

The Mexican

This movie just isn’t accomplished enough as a film to make the top 15. That being said, it’s still a funny bit of fluff that requires no real emotional investment to enjoy. James Gandolfini is great as the gay hitman, Julia Roberts is cute and charming and you can’t help but root for Brad Pitt’s bumbling character; it really isn’t his fault! Full of sharp pacing and writing the movie moves briskly to the finish line. Simply hearing the words "El Camino" makes me smile.

12 Angry Men

This should be required viewing for any person about to undertake jury duty. This is a sparse movie carried exclusively by the writing and performances. It takes place entirely (well, nearly so) in a jury deliberation room but manages to be extremely watchable despite it. Watch a couple of episodes of 48 Hours Mystery and then watch this. It scares the crap out of me that there are plenty of juries without Henry Fonda on them. More to come…

...for a six year old. And my six year old loves it. Which is the point, as it were. Superman is the kind of hero you wanted to be when playing games as a kid.

"Bang! Bang! You’re dead!"

"NO! I’m bullet proof, and anyways I’m faster than a speeding bullet!"

"AhhhHA! I’ve caught you!"

"NO! I flew away! And I have XRAY vision and laser eyes and I can hear everything."

"Well, I’m really strong and I just threw a car at you!"

"...but I’m stronger than steel!"

With all of that, you have the problem with Superman. He’s nigh invincible. Sure there’s the iconic kryptonite, but how many times can you dip into that well? Everytime? Doesn’t that get a little dull? Well, it does, in my opinion.

Superman is the greatest of all superheroes and thus the least interesting. He’s a super strong boy-scout without all the interest in guns and killing things, ie the kind of boy-scout who actually DOES help little old ladies across the street and save helpless kittens.

I must say, Kudos to Bryan Singer for making a Superman movie that is flat out entertaining out of this; finding conflict and drama where there really isn’t much. The only real drama possible with superman is the danger to those around him. Kryptonite is what makes him weak, but his inability to save everyone is what hurts him. That is where the drama lies, not in the danger to superman but in his inability to save everyone (except Lois Lane, I mean, he can turn back time for her...)

Back to my six-year-old. He was astounded. I didn’t take him to it in the theaters because I thought it might be too long and talky for him, but I forgot what makes Superman special… he’s Superman. My son kept interrupting, incredulously at every new feat:

"Superman can fly?"

"Yes..."

"Superman is bulletproof?!?"

"Yes..."

"He has laser eyes? He can see through walls? The green stuff is the only thing that can hurt him!?!"

"Yes, yes and that’s all that can hurt him!"

"Whoa… Superman is the BEST!"

There you have it. Superman is the best, especially if you’re six. I didn’t really think so going in to see it, but after it was over, my inner six-year-old tied a sheet to his back and started jumping off couches and flying down stairs. Since I’m officially an adult now, my outer twenty-seven year old simply drove a bit too fast in his car, changed lanes dramatically and pretended he was flying low rather than driving fast. Somehow, I avoided a speeding ticket, I think it would have been difficult to explain my reasoning:

"Do you know how fast you were going?"

"Umm… yeah."

"Any special reason you were going 95 miles per hour?"

"Yes… I’m SUPERMAN!"
